All self storage facilities are not the same. Climate control eliminates the temperature extremes of conventional storage. It prevents rust, mildew, mold, and cracking in fine finishes. This can be especially important if you're storing documents, records, antiques, electronic equipment, clothing, furniture, automobiles, or motorcycles. For some, this is not essential, but most things of value will benefit from a climate controlled environment.

I'm reminded of an old ad that Bell Helmets used to have. Bell was a manufacturer of quality helmets for motorcycle and automobile racers. Their ad went, "If you have a ten dollar head, buy a ten dollar helmet. If your head is worth more....buy a Bell." This is a similar situation. It depends on the value you place on the belongings you plan to store.

Over the past few months a number of people have told us stories about less desireable experiences they have had at first generation self storage facilities. These experiences are not necessarily common, but they apparently happen. The following are excerpts from those stories.

"....We had placed much of our furniture at a nearby self storage while we were in Colorado. When we went to ship our furniture to Illinois, in preparation for moving, we found it in such bad shape that we just told our friends to come and take whatever they wanted and throw the rest away...." Another tenant told us she went online to find a place to store some new upholstered furniture she had. She said she shopped strictly on price. She stored the furniture for a few months. When she picked it up, all the fabric was discolored. She said, "I'll never do that again!"..... Betty S.

"....We had stored our whole house full of furniture at one of the old fashioned types of self storage. We figured it would be fine. After all, it was in a closed garage. During the winter, snow piled up against our units overhead door. That made a little crack around the edge of the door which snow could blow through. When we went to pick our furniture up, it was covered with snow. Most of it was ruined. When we complained to the manager, he just shrugged and said, "That's the chance you take."..... Michael K.
